It might not have been the easiest road for Blake Gailen, but the Colorado Rockies are giving the Independent League star a shot at the big time.
On Saturday, baseball site yardbarker.com reported that the Rockies signed Blake Gailen, Baseball America’s reigning Independent Player of the Year.
The five-foot-nine Gailen put up unbelievable numbers for the Lancaster Barnstormers in 2012, batting .338 along with 22 homers, 89 RBIs and 25 stolen bases for the Atlantic League team. In 2011, however, he had a shot with the Los Angeles Angels’ AA affiliate and batted only .208 in 29 games.
For the Rockies this is no big deal, just another guy in the farm system. For the 27-year-old Gailen, this is a second and likely last shot at proving himself at the minor league level.
