The Rockies hope Jason Giambi will settle for the next best thing.
After the announcement that Walt Weiss would be the club’s new manager, general manager Dan O’Dowd hopes Giambi will become the Rockies’ next hitting instructor.
“We consider him a Rockie, we hope this is the spot he will consider,” O’Dowd told the Denver Post on Thursday.
The paper reported that the Rockies went away from going with Giambi as manager, because he was too close to the players after spending three years as their teammate.
Giambi said before the process that he would only retire as a player to become a club’s manager. But for now, he’ll listen to the Rockies and see what other offers come his way.
Tom Runnells is in play to stay the team’s bench coach.
