Hopefully Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov knows something the rest of us don’t know.
The Avalanche goalie told Eurolanche.com recently that he thinks the NHL will start in just three weeks. In fact, Varlamov said he thinks the NHL will start up again on December 15, right after the latest wave of NHL game cancellations.
Varlamov might be alone in thinking that way as things have continued to look grim for a potential settlement in ongoing NHL labor talks. The two sides were still far apart on talks after a meeting last Wednesday.
Varlamov, meanwhile, is spending his days playing for Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in Russia, and he’s put up gaudy numbers in his time over there, notching nine wins in 12 starts and a .951 save percentage to go with it. But the Avs’ starting netminder has been mysteriously benched the last two games, and the goalie declined to say why he’s riding the pine.
Back to the lockout and Varlamov’s optimistic prediction, maybe Varly’s got some sources that we don’t have. Either way, local hockey fans hope he’s right.
