Former Rockies great Larry Walker is returning to baseball.
The 1997 National League MVP and five-time All Star will be the hitting and first base coach for Team Canada in the upcoming 2013 World Baseball Classic in March, the team announced on Wednesday.
“I am thrilled with the coaching staff we have assembled for the World Baseball Classic,” coach and director of national teams with baseball Canada Greg Hamilton said in a statement. “All members of our staff have represented Baseball Canada in the past which speaks to their commitment and dedication to our program.”
Canada secured its spot in the event with an 11-1 victory against host Germany in September.
Walker was a member of the Colorado Rockies from 1995-2004, and in addition to his MVP and All-Star selections, he was a three-time batting title winner while also winning the Silver Slugger award three times.
Canada will be in Pool D for the World Baseball Classic with the United States, Italy and Mexico.
Walker will also be on the 2013 Hall of Fame ballot, as announced on Wednesday.
