Walt Weiss got the best early birthday present earlier this month when he was named the sixth manager in Rockies history on November 7. But today, he gets to celebrate the real thing.
Weiss turns 49 today, just three weeks after being named the Rockies’ new skipper. No word on how he’s celebrating, but maybe he’ll ask the Rockies for a multi-year contract next year for his 50th.
Happy birthday, Walt.
Fowler asking price “absurd”
A rival executive who spoke with Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan last week characterized the Rockies’ demands for center fielder Dexter Fowler as “absurd”. The 26-year-old Fowler had a breakout 2012, hitting .300 with 13 homers and 53 RBIs, and the Rockies would reportedly move him to get more pitching.
But the asking price is steep for Fowler, who is an above average defender in center and finally lived up to his promise after several so-so seasons to start his major league career.
Fowler could net the Rockies several good young players in return, particularly pitchers, but with a deep crop of center fielders also available this offseason, it doesn’t look like Fowler’s going anywhere.
