Jonathan Gray is expected to be in Denver prior to today’s Rockies game against the Washington Nationals according to a source close to the team.
Gray could sign with the Rockies as early as today and report to Grand Junction to begin in professional baseball career. The Rockies want Gray to adapt to throwing every fifth day in order to start building the arm strength needed to pitch in the majors.
Gray, a junior out of Oklahoma, was the third overall pick in the 2013 MLB Entry Draft. His final appearance for the Sooners saw him go 7.2 innings with nine strikeouts and giving up two earned runs. The Sooners lost 2-0 to the LSU Tigers.
With his college season in the books, Gray now moves into the process of progressing through the Rockies’ minor league system and hopes to be major league ready by next season.
The team’s source says that the Rockies hope Gray can finish the 2013 season in high-A Modesto.
