The Colorado Rockies needed some help in their bullpen, and they got it on Thursday with the signing of veteran lefty Mike Dunn.

Dunn, an eight-year veteran, has spent the last six seasons in Miami with the Marlins, where he had a 3.59 ERA in 405 appearances.

While Dunn has never been much of a closer — he has just four career saves — there is a clause in his contract which will pay him an additional $1 million if he does develop into the Rockies’ closer.

Dunn clearly fills a need for Colorado, but it makes a lot of sense for Dunn, too. A New Mexico kid, Dunn has some connection with the Rockies already, and Dunn has close ties with Colorado’s new bench coach, Mike Redmond.

Welcome to the Mile High City, Dunn!
