CHSAA Championship Saturday, presented by Mile High Sports, in conjunction with ESPN Denver 1600.

The 5A Girls Championship pitted the 22-5 Lakewood Tigers against the 26-1 Grandview Wolves. Senior Michaela Onyenwere scored a game-high 25 points, nearly outscoring Lakewood in the first half by herself, to lead Grandview to the title.

Renaud Notaro and Doug Ottewill were on the call from the Denver Coliseum.

Quarter 1

Michaela Onyenwere scored 11 of Grandview’s 18 points in the opening quarter and Landri Hudson hit a big 3-pointer to help pace the Wolves to a nine-point lead. Kira and her twin sister Camilla Emsbo had all of Lakewood’s points in the quarter, with five and four respectively.

Quarter 2

The Wolves took complete control in the second quarter, led by a perfect shooting performance in the half from Michaela Onyenwere. The UCLA-bound senior was 8-for-8 shooting from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Her 21 points equaled Lakewood’s total, as Grandview took a 39-21 lead into the break.

Quarter 3

Camilla Emsbo opened the half with a 3-pointer and scored all nine of Lakewood’s points in the third quarter, but Grandview’s relentless pressure on both ends keep the Wolves lead at 18 points heading into the final quarter.

Quarter 4

Lakewood tried to get aggressive to cut into the lead, but the Wolves were just too much on the defensive end. Grandview forced six turnovers in the quarter, while outscoring the Tigers 13-2. It was a dominant performance all around for the Wolves, who took home the title by a final score of 61-32.
