The Denver Broncos may have lost on Sunday, but Demaryius Thomas is having one of the best weeks of his life.
According to the Denver Post, Demaryius Thomas’ mother, who has been in prison for over 15 years, is set to be released today, November 10, meaning that she will be able to watch her son play professional football for the first time in his career this weekend at Sports Authority Field.
In case you weren’t aware, Thomas’ mother, Katina Smith, was arrested back in 2000, when Thomas was just 12 years old. She has since been serving her sentence for drug trafficking at a federal prison in Florida. In that time, she has missed nearly every moment of Thomas’ football career, from his three seasons at Georgia Tech to his to his six seasons with the Denver Broncos.
Smith was schedule to be released on June 25, 2017, but had her sentence commuted by President Barack Obama back in July.
This obviously makes Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs much more than just another game for Thomas. For so many athletes, there’s a comfort in knowing that their parents are sitting 20 rows up in the stands each week; I can only imagine the emotions that will be coursing through DT as his mother watches him play for the first time.
