On Monday, the Denver Broncos signed Linebacker Kasim Edebali to a one-year contract to help build their depth on defense; but his former head coach says he will bring much more to the table.

“Man…he’s just one of those guys you hate to lose” New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton told Mile High Sports. “He came in here and busted his tail. He’s going to be a good situational rusher, and he’s also a guy that will play on all four special teams.”

If there’s anyone who can give a ringing endorsement for the 27-year old out of Boston College, it’s his former head coach in Payton. Edebali played three years under Payton, tallying 41 total tackles to go with eight sacks in his time with the Saints.

Payton also spoke about Edebali’s impact off of the field, stating: “he’s a great locker room guy and could also be, if you have a ping pong table, the top ping pong player as well.”

Versatility is what Denver is getting in Edebali. With the departure Kayvon Webster, the Broncos needed an effective guy on special teams, one that can bring energy to the table. Coach Payton says he brings just that; adding a little something extra on defense as well.

“He’s a situational end that I think special teams coaches will be excited about; and I think also defensively, he’s an effort, energy rusher. His technique has gotten better.”

It’s certainly been a long road for the German-born linebacker. “He’s a guy, when he came here, he didn’t have his green card, he wasn’t a citizen yet” said Payton. “I know all of that’s taken place, from getting a driver’s license. He’s someone that the first time you meet him, he’ll leave an impression on you. I think it’s a great sign for Denver.”

High praise for Edebali, who took to Twitter to express his thanks to Broncos Country.
