Wade Phillips is proving things do get better with age. The Broncos’ defensive coordinator, who turns 69 later this month, is enjoying arguably the best year of his life and more than 900 people packed the Bob Bowers Civic Center in Port Arthur, Texas to celebrate.

Phillips began his 40-year coaching career at nearby Port Neches-Groves High School and was honored with the “Homecoming Roast of Wade Phillips” on Friday night.

The event featured Texas football luminaries including Jimmy Johnson and J.J. Watt, featured below.

While Watt’s comments were mostly heartfelt, he still managed to land a few jabs at his former defensive coordinator.

Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak wasn’t in attendance, but he still took time to bust on Phillips for the hit he took from Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryant.

CBS broadcaster Jim Nantz was busy covering golf, but striped this one down the middle for his friend “Wayne Phillips.”

And two of the Manning brothers teamed up to rag on Phillips’ penchant for giving up records to Peyton while Cooper delivered a killer Bum Phillips impression.
