In 2007, the Colorado Rockies finished the regular season by winning 14 of 15 games to leap from fourth place in the NL West into what would eventually become their first and only World Series appearance. DIAMONDBACKS 4, ROCKIES 2
The Rockies had their first misstep since Sept. 15, losing to the Diamondbacks to break their 11-win streak. The Rockies left eight players on base, and despite nine hits, only scored twice, going one-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Arizona jumped out to a three-run lead by the third inning before the Rockies were able to put together any offense; left fielder Matt Holliday would single to center field, allowing second baseman Kazuo Matsui to score. Diamondbacks starter Brandon Webb retired the next ten batters, while Arizona added another run to their lead.
Rockies batters Matsui, Holliday, Garrett Atkins and Brad Hawpe all had multi-hit games, but unfortunately no other Rockies batters could connect to help generate any offense. The Rockies added one more run in the seventh inning, but couldn’t catch up to the early lead built by the Diamondbacks. Starting pitcher Jeff Francis went six innings, but gave up seven hits and all four runs the Diamondbacks would need to win.
With a Padres’ win over the Milwaukee Brewers, the Rockies would fall to a two-game deficit for the Wild Card with two games to go. Their hopes rested on a razor’s edge, now that they needed some help from a Brewers team who was just eliminated from their divisional race, and no longer had anything to play for.
