Colorado won both games last weekend against San Jose, a 3-0 blanking on Friday and a 4-3 squeaker on Saturday at Ball Arena in Denver. The scene now shifts to San Jose for the next two games between the teams.

Let’s take a look at this matchup, the seventh of eight between San Jose and Colorado (and third in four nights), from a betting perspective in our Avalanche vs. Sharks betting preview with odds, picks and predictions for this May 3 matchup.

Nathan MacKinnon got back on the scoresheet with a multi-point game Saturday after seeing his 15-game point streak snapped by the Sharks on Friday. Mikko Rantanen also added two more points and Connor Timmins had a pair of assists.

On Friday, Philipp Grubauer made 21 saves in his return from a battle with COVID-19 and earned a shutout. Grubauer is likely to be in net again tonight for the Avalanche.

The Sharks got a breakout game from Alexander Barbanov on Saturday. Logan Couture and Thomas Hertl also scored as the Sharks were able to hang around with Colorado, something very few teams have been able to say this season.

Avalanche vs. Sharks Betting Pick (May 3, 2021)

The Sharks offense is still struggling. They only scored 39 goals in their last 17 games (2.29 per game) and 10 of those 39 came in back-to-back wins against Arizona just before this series of games against the Avalanche. That means they averaged just 1.93 goals per game in the other 15 contests. No wonder their record in those games was 3-11-1.

The Avalanche still have their sights set on first place in the West Division, trailing Vegas by four points, although Colorado does have a game in hand.

Avalanche vs. Sharks Odds

Here are the lines for Avalanche vs. Sharks at DraftKings Sportsbook:

Spread: Avalanche (-1.5 -107), Sharks (+1.5 -112)
Moneyline: Avalanche (-265); Sharks (+220)
Over/Under: Over 6 (-117)/Under 6 (-104)

Mikko Rantanen to score 2+ points (+165, DraftKings)

Rantanen has five goals and five assists for 10 points in six games this season vs. San Jose. He has nine of those 10 points in the last three meetings alone. He had consecutive multi-point games against them last weekend. With these odds, it’s worth a shot at a third in a row.

Logan Couture OVER 0.5 points (+116, FanDuel)

Couture has five points in his last five games and has been solid against Colorado so far this season with a pair of goals and a pair of assists in six games. If the Sharks are going to win (we don’t think they will) Couture is likely going to have to come through for them with some kind of offense. Just a point gets you more bang for your buck. It’s worth it.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Avalanche to win by more than 1.5 goals AND UNDER 6 total goals (+325, DraftKings)

The Sharks have struggled with Grubauer this season, and since he is back in net, we don’t expect much offense from the Sharks. On the other hand, Colorado has done a nice job of putting the puck in the net all season. Their +51 goal differential is second-best only to Vegas in the NHL this season, and there’s no reason they can’t add substantially to that tonight. They score high, their opponents score low, and with +325 odds, there’s money to be won.

Avalanche vs. Sharks Prediction

No contest here. The Avs are the superior team and on a mission. The Sharks gave them a game last Saturday. We doubt that’ll be the same tonight.

Pick: Avalanche 4, Sharks 1
