Mike Bobo is going into his fourth season as Colorado State Football head coach (21-18 record overall) and is looking for his first bowl win as a head coach and for CSU’s first bowl victory since 2013.
Speaking to Brian Roth, Bobo talked about his health, and expectations for the season.
For those who don’t know, Bobo was hospitalized for 10 days and was being treated for peripheral neuropathy but is happy and excited to kick off the season on Saturday against Hawaii.
“It’s been a challenging ten days,” said Bobo. “In the second half of camp, I started to get some numbness and it just kept getting worse each day. They admitted me to a hospital after our second scrimmage and it’s been trying. But, I’ve been discharged by the doctors and just glad to be back.”
Bobo talked about the preparations that his staff and he made upon his return from the hospital.
“I wanted to go in and watch as much film as I could offensive staff,” Bobo continued. “I kind of felt like I was slowing the process down when I walked in a little bit because people were getting up – happy to see me and everything. They’ve been planning for me not to be back.”
True freshman Devin Phillips and Rashad Ajayi have been making an impact during the offseason for the Rams and Bobo has been pleased with the growth from his freshman class.
“We’ve had some great competition,” said Bobo. “We really felt that our freshman class was a strong freshman class – especially on the defensive side of the ball.”
Bobo explained that he has seen a lot of growth from the offensive line during the offseason and is excited to see what kind of impact that they can have in 2018.
“I feel like we’ve come a long well with the offensive line,” Bobo explained. “Yes, we lost four guys who played a lot for us last year, but I feel like we’ve got some continuity with a number of guys that we played last year.”
K.J. Carta-Samuels will be the starting quarterback for the Rams in 2018 and Bobo and his staff have been pleased with what they have seen from the Washington graduate transfer so far.
“He’s a selfless guy,” said Bobo. “He came in and worked extremely hard. He didn’t come in like he was anointed to be the quarterback. He works. I’ve been so impressed with what a student of the game he is. He’s constantly grinding.”
