Everybody knows that the offensive line is a priority for the Denver Broncos this offseason. John Elway has said it. it. Vance Joseph has said it. Virtually every national and local pundit has as well. But when they look for a left tackle specifically, they will evaluate options both near and far.
“It is very important,” Broncos general manager John Elway said of the left tackle position. “Obviously you protect the backside of the quarterback. They’re not guys that grow on trees either. They’re difficult to find. We’ll do everything we can to try and find the best fit. If that’s Russell [Okung], great. If not, then we’ll see what else is out there.”
Less than a week ago, the Broncos decided not to pick up the option on Russell Okung‘s contract. Apparently, while they aren’t interested in Okung at that price (four years, $48 million), they may still be interested in Okung.
“It comes down to money, too; it’s not a bottomless pit,” Elway said. “Russell is somebody we would like to continue to talk to. Then we’ll look at the other guys that are going to be on the market.”
The Broncos may have some competition for Okung’s services. The Seahawks, with whom he played before joining the Broncos, are reportedly planning on contacting the veteran once free agency opens; with general manager John Schneider stating that him leaving last offseason would not deter them from speaking to the offensive lineman.
