After announcing this morning that they would be moving on from Nathaniel Hackett as head coach, despite being a mere 15 games into his tenure, the Denver Broncos have now finally shared who will be taking his place — Jerry Rosburg.

Rosburg, the game management assistant whom the Broncos brought in, following their early-season gaffes, will be the one taking over.

Now, it’s practically impossible to imagine Rosburg coaching this team after these two weeks, so the selection is certainly a surprising one, but because the impact will be so minimal, it’s hard to get worked up over.

Rosburg previously has worked as a special teams coordinator for Notre Dame (1999-2000), the Cleveland Browns (2001-2006), the Atlanta Falcons (2007), and the Baltimore Ravens (2008-2018). During his time with the Ravens, he also served as an assistant head coach.

This move concludes a rise from Jerry Rosburg that has been wildly quick. He went from being retired from coaching to being an NFL head coach in a span of just three months.

One reason why the Broncos might have gone with Rosburg over a more obvious candidate, like red-hot defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, is that this will make it easier to retain Evero as their defensive coordinator moving forward, if they so desire.

Another aspect, which was brought up by Mike Klis of 9News, is that Evero and Hackett are very close friends, and so asking Evero to take over for Hackett might’ve created some discomfort. There are no such ties with Jerry Rosburg.

That fact also highlights that decision might be driven by ownership, as they intentionally chose someone who wasn’t brought on by Hackett initially.
