It doesn’t matter that the Broncos had the best defense in football last season. The Broncos still feel like their defense was not and still is not getting the respect they deserve.

Cornerback Kayvon Webster joined Sports Guy Mike on Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7, saying that despite the team’s Super Bowl 50 win they’re still playing with a chip on their shoulder.

“I don’t think we were gaining the respect of the league,” said Webster.

“They never really talked about the defense much. They were like ‘oh they got it because of this, they got it because of that’ not because we played great,” suggesting that lucky breaks paved the way for a championship season.

Webster isn’t the first to say the league still has room to grow in how it views the Broncos defense. Pro Bowl safety T.J. Ward voiced similar concerns and New England fans were quite incredulous about their losses in Denver last year.

Denver no doubt had plenty of plays go their way. They also made spectacular plays on both defense and special teams – like when Webster pinned Pittsburgh deep in its own territory with an acrobatic play during the playoffs. The Broncos may not be getting the respect they feel they deserve, but they know as Super Bowl champs they will be in everyone’s crosshairs this season.

“It’s a new season and a target is on our back,” Webster said, “so we’ve got to come back ready to defend the title.”
