Veteran’s minicamp opened on Tuesday for the Denver Broncos, meaning that the quarterback competition between Trevor Siemian (who is 100 percent healthy) and Paxton Lynch is officially underway. Though it has just been one day, head coach Vance Joseph liked what he saw from both of his quarterbacks.
“They both did a great job of communicating in the huddle,” Joseph said. “It was really sharp today. They threw the ball well today; both guys did. Outside of that, it’s tough. It’s the first day, it’s the first install, but they were both very engaged.”
Last season, Siemian was in a offense he was familiar with and Lynch was a rookie. Now, they are both starting from the same spot, trying to learn a new offense.
“The cool thing is that we’re both still young,” Siemian said. “We’re kind of learning this whole deal together, which is good.”
Though they are competing against each other, there is no animosity between Siemian and Lynch. Lynch echoed Siemian’s sentiment, expanding upon it even; stating his excitement about going through the process of learning an offense with the entire unit.
“It’s definitely cool in the aspect that we’re all learning it together,” Lynch said. “It’s really cool to me, because you kind of get an idea of how other people see it and how they are learning it. You kind of find ways to learn it and see how other guys find it easy to learn and take notes from them. You discuss and make your way through it as a team.”
As far as the offense itself, both quarterbacks like what they’ve seen thus far. It might be more pressure on them, but that’s not something that they are shying away from.
“I think it’s a good offense,” explained Siemian. “You can find a lot of completions in this offense. I think it’s a little bit more on the quarterbacks. as far as protections and getting into the right play. But I like it. Obviously I haven’t played in a game with it and this is our first day out here, but I think it’s going to be good not just for the quarterbacks, but everybody.”
