Marquette King isn’t the swaggering, dancing, fun-loving punter we saw with the Raiders.

King — who averaged 48.05 yards per punt the last two seasons with Oakland — is struggling mightily with the Denver Broncos this season. His 44.05 yard per punt average is No. 22 in the NFL, far lower than the Broncos were expecting to get out of him.

Especially when considering Denver gave King a three-year, $6 million deal. Plus, a $500,000 signing bonus. For a punter, those are big-time numbers.

Last week was perhaps King’s worst while with the Broncos, somewhat shocking considering the altitude is supposed to help punters and kickers excel. His seven punts look like this: 38, 41, 42, 39, 35, 55, and 37 yards, respectively. Sure, King shouldn’t be asked to punt the ball seven times in a game and the offense must perform better, but without that booming, 55-yard punt, his average would’ve been in the 30s.

King reportedly left the loss to the Kansas City Chiefs with a groin injury, and he’s yet to see the practice field this week in the lead-up to the road contest against the New York Jets. If he can’t play, that opens the door for Colby Wadman, who the Broncos signed to their practice squad on Sept. 25.

“We would have to do that, absolutely,” Broncos head coach Vance Joseph said of making a roster move and promoting Wadman to the active roster, if King can’t play this week.

Wadman, an undrafted free agent out of UC Davis, played four years there (2013-16) before being signed to the Oakland Raiders practice squad and then was released. He also spent time in Denver at the mandatory mini-camp this year, but wasn’t signed until lat week.

“He’s been good,” Joseph said of Wadman. “He’s obviously a young guy, but he’s got talent and he’s a smart guy. If he had to go for us, I’d be comfortable with Colby.”

Wadman and King were to have a “punt-off” at Dove Valley this week according to Mike Klis of 9News, but since King hasn’t practiced all week, that competition hasn’t happened. Though, it still could when the Broncos are at practice today.

At this point, it seems more likely Denver will have to go with Wadman, which makes things more interesting considering the New York Jets have Andre Roberts, the NFL’s second-best punt returner.
