Pursuing Les Miles would come with several hazards

The reported impending ouster of Les Miles as the head coach of Louisiana State has some backers of the Colorado Buffaloes football team wondering if there’s not a chance to bring the coach, who served from 1982 to ’86 under Bill McCartney, back to Boulder.

Even some of the prominent figures from the Buffs championship era have come out to say that Miles could reinvigorate recruiting, including Charles Johnson, who joined The Nosebleed Section on Mile High Sports AM 1340 this week to say just that.

But one observer who covers the team says head coach Mike MacIntyre deserves one more year to show that he can make progress with a Buffaloes football program that has seen the head coaching position become a revolving door over the past decade.

Adam Munsterteiger, publisher of BuffStampede.com, appeared on Sports Stampede with Mark Knudson and Michael Klahr on Saturday in advance of Colorado’s season finale with Utah to share his thoughts on the short- and long-term plan for the Buffaloes.

While he admits that bringing Miles back to Boulder is a very intriguing prospect, he cautions that there are a number of factors, not the least of which is money, to be considered. A buyout of MacIntyre, plus the hefty price tag Miles will certainly command needs to be at the forefront of the discussion.

Knudson says the biggest problem with pursuing Miles is that it would require CU athletic director Rick George to go back on his word, having said earlier this month that MacIntyre will get one more year to show he can turn things around. That’s a potentially rotten situation for George.

Still, the prospect of bringing in a national title-winning coach has plenty of the Buffaloes’ faithful playing the “what if” game. Even though he believes MacIntyre deserves another year, Munsterteiger says George needs to take the call from Miles’ agent if and when it comes.
