After three seasons as the Colorado Avalanche’s head coach, where he went 130-92 and led the team to one playoff appearance, Patrick Roy has stepped down as head coach.

It isn’t so much a surprise that the two sides have decided to move on, but that it happened right now. The Avalanche are just over two months away from the start of their season and two months removed from when the coaching market dried up. Filling Roy’s seat with a competent replacement is a considerably more difficult task now than it would have been immediately after the season.

Roy’s last two years as the Avalanche head coach have been disappointing to say the least, and the general opinion was that this was a make-or-break season for the hockey legend.

Apparently, Roy opted for an early break.
