Lombardi. Walsh. Parcells. Landry. Just a few names that stand out as legendary head coaches in NFL history. Win or lose in Bill Belichick’s eighth Super Bowl, his bust will sure stand alongside those all-time greats cast in bronze and on display in Canton.

Another coach who knows a thing or two about winning is former Denver Broncos head coach Dan Reeves, who spoke with Gil Whiteley and Mark Jackson of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7 about the similarities between Belichick and the all-time greats. Reeves sees particular similarities to the coach from his own playing days with the Cowboys, Tom Landry.

“He was more knowledgeable than anybody I was every around, and I think when I look at the people that played for him Belichick is a lot like that — knowing both offense and defense,” Reeves said.

“Coach Landry was very knowledgeable at both. That’s the reason why he came up with all the shifts, motions and so forth that we did, because those were the things that created difficulties for him on defense.”

Reeves also touched on the challenges that have faced Belichick in today’s NFL, suggesting that Belichick’s Hall of Fame candidacy isn’t even a question.

“He’s done it at a time that’s so difficult with free agency and so forth. I tell people all the time they shouldn’t even [need to] vote Belichick, he ought to be in the Hall of Fame already,” Reeves said.

Reeves described Coach Landry as one of the greatest men at preperation and motivation, relating it to much of what Belichick is known for in New England.

“Coach Landry used to say preparation is the greatest motivator of all, and I don’t think you ever see a New England Patriots team that isn’t totally prepared for every phase of this game.”
