The Colorado Rockies lost starting pitcher Jon Gray to a broken left foot last week. Gray has since been placed on the disabled list and is expected to miss about a month, leaving a void in the Rockies starting rotation.

As I wrote last week, there were four primary arms the Rockies could use in light of Gray’s injury, including Jeff Hoffman, German Marquez, Chris Rusin and Harrison Musgrave.

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, The Rockies will call up German Marquez on Tuesday to fill the hole in the rotation.

From Rosenthal:

“The Rockies’ rotation will include three rookies once they promote right-hander German Marquez to replace the injured Jon Gray on Tuesday.”

Marquez, 22, made the Rockies roster out of Spring Training as a relief pitcher but was demoted to Triple-A shortly thereafter due to the return of long reliever Chris Rusin.

Marquez has impressed in his time in the minor leagues, boosting his velocity while refining his command and control of the strike zone. Marquez has amassed over 500 innings in the minors, compiling an ERA of .361 in that time span.

The Rockies begin a four-game series with the Washington Nationals tonight. Marquez will likely start Tuesday’s ballgame.

In his brief time in the Majors, Marquez is 1-1 with an ERA of 5.13.
