When you’re hot, you’re hot.
OK, for the last two games, the Rockies put up a phenomenal 19 runs and 26 hits combined; there’s no doubting they were white-hot from the plate.
That seemed to cool off Saturday night, the second game against the New York Mets, as the Rockies fell back to earth and put up only six hits and scoring two runs to win 2-0. But they did stay hot in terms of winning ballgames, taking their fourth straight on this road trip — beating Chicago twice and now New York twice, with a day off in between.
The offense fired up early once again on this night, as Arenado went deep in the first inning to take the 1-0 lead for the Rockies that they’d hold onto all night long.
For most of the game, that was all the offense the Rockies would need. Chad Bettis pitched a gem, giving up six hits and zero earned runs in seven innings pitched. Bettis continued the fantastic pitching the Rockies have been enjoying as of late, and the offense gave him just enough support to win.
In the ninth inning, the Rockies came alive again to score two — or make that one — to push their lead to 2-0 and the eventual winning margin.
A two-out rally from the Rockies pushed them to score another run, started off by Chris Iannetta being hit by a pitch. Then, Noel Cuevas — who’s mom was in town to root him on, after she was there in Miami, too — came through with a hit into right field, and a passed ball against Carlos Gonzalez moved Iannetta and Cuevas up to second and third. Gonzalez was walked, loading the bases, with David Dahl up.
Dahl came through with a huge hit, sending Iannetta and Cuevas home; Iannetta scored with ease, while Cuevas slid and appeared to get his toe to the plate before he was tagged, but he was called out. Replay confirmed he was out.
Wade Davis closed the door on the Mets for a second straight game, picking up his 13th save. Bettis improved to 4-1 on the season and dropped his ERA to a mere 2.05 on the year.
Colorado improves to 19-15 on the season as well as 5-2 in road game series. Tomorrow, the Rockies and Mets play the final game of the series early, with first pitch at 11:10 am MT.
