University of Colorado head football coach Mike MacIntyre announced the captains for his fourth Buffalo team on Tuesday, with five veteran players the choices of their teammates, including a history-making third year for senior quarterback Sefo Liufau.
The team met Tuesday morning to elect the 2016 captains; after a discussion of who they thought would be the best leaders on several fronts, the five who emerged as CU’s captains includes two seniors, Liufau and inside linebacker Kenneth Olugbode and three juniors, tight end/H-back George Frazier, offensive tackle Jeromy Irwinand tailback Phillip Lindsay.
Lindsay, Liufau and Olugbode were captains last season as members of MacIntyre’s 12-man leadership council, from which four players were selected to serve as game captains each week throughout the season.
Liufau, having been named a captain as a sophomore in 2014 and again last year, will be just the second CU player to serve as a team captain for three seasons, the first since quarterback Pat Carney did so over 120 years ago in 1891-92-93, which were just the second, third and fourth years of the program’s existence.
“All those guys have been here at least four years,” MacIntyre said. “They’re truly ingrained into what we want, they know the culture that we have and what we are striving to achieve. Each one of them is a great competitor and will represent the team well.”
