Avalanche call up Joey Hishon from Lake Erie

Following the NHL’s trade deadline on Monday, the Colorado Avalanche announced that they had called up Joey Hishon from the AHL’s Lake Erie Monsters. The 23-year-old forward will fill a roster spot that was opened by the Avs’ deadline deal that sent Maxime Talbot and Paul Carey to the Boston Bruins.

After starting his career with a vicious head injury, Hishon was called up and got his first NHL action during the playoffs last season – registering one assist in three contests against the Minnesota Wild. The 2010 draft’s 17th overall selection has 14 goals and 32 points in 50 games with the Monsters this season.

Hishon will be a free agent this summer. He has 19 games left on the Avs’ schedule to potentially get in the lineup, prove his worth, and earn his next contract.
