Colorado State linebacker Kevin Davis is the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week. The conference made the announcement Monday morning, two days after Davis was part of two turnovers in a come-from-behind win over Utah State that featured a second-half shutout by the defense.

Davis, a senior from Fountain, Colo., recorded seven tackles, an interception, fumble recovery and quarterback hurry in the victory. The biggest play was the interception, which came with 47 seconds remaining in the contest and CSU clinging to a seven-point lead. The turnover ended Utah State’s last-minute attempt to tie the game and sealed the Rams’ comeback victory.

Trailing by 14 points at halftime, the Rams cut the deficit to a single score on their first possession of the third quarter. One play later, senior defensive back Tyree Simmons knocked the ball loose, which was recovered by Davis. It was his second career fumble recovery, to go along with his two forced fumbles earlier this season. Davis’ quarterback hurry also came at a key time, flushing Kent Myers out of the pocket on 3rd-and-3 and forcing the Aggies to punt. CSU got the ball near midfield and scored the game-winning touchdown five plays later.

In July, Davis was named to the Butkus Award watch list, and earlier this month was added to the Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list.

The defense’s second-half shutout allowed the Rams to score 21 unanswered points and earn a homecoming victory in front of a near-capacity crowd. CSU (3-3) will now face nationally ranked Boise State Saturday at 8:15 p.m. in Boise, Idaho. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
