Devontae Booker on his new role: “I know I can handle it”

After a second opinion on his knee, C.J. Anderson will have surgery to repair a torn meniscus. Devontae Booker and Anderson had a breakout game on Monday night, rushing for a combined 190 yards. With Anderson out for the foreseeable future, Booker is going to take control of the run game for Denver.

“It’s a huge opportunity for me,” Booker told Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro of Afternoon Drive on Mile High Sports Radio. “Just to go out there and do good for my team and help us win. I think I’m ready for a bigger work load. I go out and practice hard every day and study film to expand my role in the offense.”

In his rookie season, Booker has averaged 4.8 yards a carry. Now that he will be taking the majority of the carries, the Broncos are hoping he will adapt to a bigger workload.

“I know I can handle it,” Booker said. “It’s just a matter of if the coaches want to give me that many [carries].”

Anderson has a great connection with Trevor Siemian and was able to guide him in making plays. Booker feels like he will be able to do the same after a little more experience in the league.

“I’m still a rookie right now and I’m still learning,” Booker said. “When I get to that point of feeling really confident to tell him stuff then I think I can do it.”

Protecting Siemian on play-action plays is very important and Booker knows exactly what he has to do. He is confident in his blocking.

“I feel comfortable. I can’t go out there and just half-ass block,” Booker said. “I’ve got to hit ’em and stick ’em and be strong on them.”

He’s still learning halfway into his rookie season. Booker plans to seek advice from Anderson any time he has the opportunity.

“If he’s still around here and the facilities, I’ll be talking to him and he can give me some tips and pointers,” Booker said.
