During Monday’s 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings, Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon came out of the game during the second period. Following the game, head coach Jared Bednar said it was a lower body injury.

On Wednesday, Bednar told members of the media that MacKinnon is expected to miss up to two weeks with that injury.

During a radio interview with Altitude Sports Radio 92.5 on Tuesday, Bednar said he was not sure of how the injury happened.

“I don’t think it was just one incident,” Bednar told Brett Kane, Vic Lombardi and Marc Moser in the interview. “I just think he went out to play and didn’t feel great sometime during the first period.”

MacKinnon currently leads the Avalanche in goals with 35 and assists with 58.

If MacKinnon misses the full two weeks, the Avalanche will be without his services for a total of seven games, including five games at home at the Pepsi Center. The Avs currently hold the second-best record in the NHL’s Western Conference, two points behind the St. Louis Blues. Colorado has 13 games remaining in the regular season.
