As Mile High Sports Magazine celebrates its annual college football preview issue, this year featuring two local wide receivers on the Biletnikoff Award watch list, Rashard Higgins of Colorado State and Nelson Spruce of Colorado, the debate will rage as to which of these standouts is the best in the state.
It got us to thinking just who might be the best at each position, not just this year, but of all time. Thus, throughout the month of August, we’re leaving it up to you the readers to help us determine who are the best Colorado (the entire state, not just the University of variety) college football players of all time at each position.

Quarterback
It all starts with the quarterback. At every level of football, since the invention of the forward pass, the quarterback has been the man who bears the biggest burden of success or failure of a team. Colorado universities have seen plenty of success through the years, all thanks to these stellar quarterbacks. It’s no coincidence that these schools’ best years were when these guys were at the helm. But which is the best of all time? Submit your vote below!

Every team needs a guy who can “take the ball and run with it.” And the running backs literally do just that. These are the workhorses of the offense – the guys who grind out the hard yards and take punishment just for doing their jobs. The state of Colorado has seen some exceptional running backs over the years; this list represents the cream of the crop.

Wide Receiver
Ahh, the fly boys. The speed demons. The hands. The ones who, if you ask them, make those quarterbacks look so darn good. Yes, wide receiver is a glory position, and each of these players brought plenty of glory to their respective teams. The Centennial State has been blessed with so much wide receiver talent, we had to expand this list just to fit them all on our poll. Vote for your choice, if you can.

Tight End
Great tight ends must have the skills for three different positions. They’ve got to be able to block like offensive linemen, catch passes like wide receivers and run like running backs. Tight ends must be big, versatile and smart. And though the Centennial State hasn’t yet produced an All-American at tight end, it doesn’t mean we haven’t had some great ones.

Center
The men who start it all. Without the center, those poor quarterbacks wouldn’t know what to do. These are the anchors of the offensive line, the mooring that keeps the ship from going adrift. Our fine state has seen some great ones through the years, including four All-Americans and many who went on to long and prosperous careers in the NFL.

It’s easy to overlook the guards, sometimes. But what would a Bic Mac be without those two all-beef patties? Just cheese, pickles, onions, special sauce and a sesame seed bun. Well, there’s certainly something special about this group. It’s an all Buffs list, and each was an All-American during his time at Colorado.

When it comes to protecting the quarterback’s blind side (or just his backside in general), these guys are highly visible. The Centennial State has produced a number of exceptional tackles through the years, especially of late, who have turned college success into important roles on NFL rosters.

That guy you don’t want to meet in a dark alley late at night? Odds are he was an interior defensive lineman at some point in his life. If we weren’t scared of what they might do to us, we’d call them the “big uglies.” Colorado has had it’s share of great ones spanning more than seven decades.

Exterior Defensive Line
The Beastie Boys probably weren’t talking about D-linemen when they penned those infinitely repeated lyrics, “you can’t, you won’t and you don’t stop,” but they certainly ring true. Whether it was rushing the quarterback, manhandling running backs or just causing general mayhem on the field, these exterior defensive linemen were “sure shots,” without a doubt.

Great kickers don’t just have a boot that can kick a ball a country mile; they’ve also got the steel nerves and steady eye of a sniper. And the Centennial State has seem some of the best ever.
