Dan Reeves shares the advice he gave his son-in-law, interim head coach Joe DeCamillis

Gary Kubiak suffered a complex migraine on Sunday following the Broncos’ loss to the Falcons, and he will not be with the team tonight when they face off against the Chargers on Thursday Night Football. General manager John Elway announced that special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis will be running the team in his stead.

On Tuesday, former Denver Broncos head coach and Ring of Fame member Dan Reeves — who just so happens to be DeCamillis’ father-in-law — joined Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro on Afternoon Drive on Mile High Sports Radio to talk about any advice he had for his son-in-law.

“First of all, I congratulated him,” Reeves said. “But I also gave him the same advice Coach [Tom] Landry gave me when I became a head coach in Denver. I told him to be yourself. People pick up on being phony quicker then anything. You can’t be like Gary Kubiak; you’ve got to be yourself.”

With DeCamillis taking the job this week, many wondered how he would coach the team. His game plan and in-game decisions will not be much different from what Kubiak’s have been. This coaching staff is on the same page and will continue business as usual.

“I think Gary has had a lot to do with what Joe’s thinking is,” Reeves said. “He’s been involved in trying to handle things as far as the clock is concerned. Gary has put his imprint on it. I told Joe to reach out to Gary to talk and see if there was anything that he would like to see Joe do. But he’s got a great coaching staff. They’ve been together for a long time and have a great deal of respect for each other.”

DeCamillis talked to Reeves about handling the media, and Reeves had one piece of advice.

“You just have to realize that they have a job to do, and you’ve got to respect that,” Reeves said. “Help them do their job, and if you do, they’ll help you do yours.”
