Derek Wolfe: “If someone comes looking for a fight, we’re going to fight”

Derek Wolfe

In the loss to the Titans on Sunday, Harry Douglas went after Chris Harris Jr. with a low block far away from the actual play. The defense took notice and were quick to reply by retaliating on the Titans sideline. Aqib Talib took down Douglas and a small brawl ensued.

As frustrating as this season has been for this Broncos team, they will always stand up for one another. The retaliation on Douglas to defend Harris wasn’t a question to the Broncos.

“We’re brothers and what happens when somebody jumps your brother? You’ve got to retaliate; you’ve got to help your brother out,” Derek Wolfe told Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro of Afternoon Drive on Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7. “As soon as I saw Talib on the ground rolling, I was sprinting across the field. That’s what we do for each other. We take that stuff serious.”

There are times in a game where the players have to set things aside and do what’s best for the team. With the situation on Sunday, Talib could have been ejected which would have hurt their defense.

“That’s where it’s a fine line between your pride and what’s best for the team,” Wolfe said. “It’s a tough situation. I try to do what’s best for the team at all times; I’m not going to be a selfish guy. And I’m not saying Talib was selfish at all because he even warned the ref. He said, ‘Hey, if he comes at me throw your flag because I’m not going to put up with that stuff.’ He came after Talib, and Talib put him on the ground.”

The Broncos have had a rough season, and they are frustrated with their play. But they won’t stand for any dirty play on their teammates.

“At the end of the day, nobody got ejected,” Wolfe said. “There was a flag thrown but you have to do what you have to do. If someone comes looking for a fight, we’re going to fight. I don’t think we are a cheap, dirty team. We play hard and within the rules of the game. If a guy is all the way on the other side of the field from the play, and you’re going to try and take his knees out? Come on man, what kind of shit is that.”
