The Denver Broncos’ Ring of Fame will not feature a new name this season for the first time since 2011, Mike Klis of 9News first reported Thursday morning.
The team had inducted a member in each of the last six years, a streak that is tied for the longest in team history. During that time, 10 new members were added to the Ring of Fame.
Originally created by owner Pat Bowlen in 1984, the Ring of Fame consists of 32 members. Coach Red Miller, the lone inductee of 2017, is the latest addition to the prestigious group of players, coaches and executives. This is the 15th occasion in the Ring of Fame’s 34-year history that a new member will not be added.
A six-person committee consisting of past and current Broncos brass votes each year on the new inductees. To be eligible for induction, a player or coach is typically required to wait five years from the conclusion of their careers. However, that waiting period was waived for current Executive Vice President John Elway.
The Ring is certain to expand in coming years as Champ Bailey and Peyton Manning are eligible for induction in 2019 and 2021, respectively. Players who are currently eligible, including Ed McCaffrey and Steve Foley, can also still be inducted in coming years.
