The Colorado Rockies managed to scratch out seven hits against Alex Wood (4-0, 2.27 ERA) and the Los Angeles Dodgers pitching staff, but none of those runners managed to cross the plate in a 4-0 loss at Coors Field on Saturday night. Wood struck out 10 Rockies over six innings, allowing five hits and a walk to earn his fourth victory on the season and pull the Dodgers within a half game of the Rockies for the lead in the NL West.
Tyler Anderson (2-4, 6.43) struck out eight and allowed only five hits of his own over 5.2 innings pitched, but a two-run second inning was all the Dodgers’ staff would need to earn the shutout victory over Colorado. Justin Turner had a pair of hits and an RBI to lead Los Angeles. Brett Eibner hit his first home run of the year – a solo shot off Anderson in the fifth. Mike Dunn allowed a run on two hits in the seventh out of the Colorado bullpen.
Wood was the man of the night, though. Only DJ LeMahieu managed to solve Wood more than once (and one of his two hits against the lefty was of the infield variety). LeMahieu ended the night with three singles to raise his average to .283 on the year. He was the only Rockies player to record more than one hit. Five Rockies struck out twice en route to a team total of 14 on the night.
Los Angeles can take the lead in the NL West and a series win with a victory on Sunday. Colorado will hope for a series split to avoid only their third series loss on the year. Rockies rookie Antonio Senzatela (5-1, 2.86) will face Dodgers phenom Julio Urias (0-0, 1.06).
