How We Got Here
Following the May 2018 Supreme Court strike down of PASPA, Colorado lawmakers went to work on bringing sports betting to the state. HB19-1327, a bill legalizing both online and retail sports betting, received bipartisan support, paving the way for Proposition DD to reach November 2019 ballots. Proposition DD was a formal referendum asking Colorado residents to pass legal sports betting, which it did by an unexpectedly small margin.
With the approval, a May 1 launch date was established, clearing the way for the January 2020 announcement that DraftKings Sportsbook was coming to the Centennial State via a partnership with Twin Rivers Holdings. The deal allows for DraftKings Sportsbook to offer its online betting platform in Colorado as well as open a retail location at Black Hawk’s Golden Mardi Gras Casino.
DraftKings Sportsbook Colorado, which immediately began operations with the state’s May 1 launch of legal sports betting, will be one of the 17 different sportsbooks expected to be offered by the end of 2020. Rival sportsbooks such as FanDuel Sportsbook, BetMGM and BetRivers also began operations with the dawn of the state’s legal sports betting.
