The Colorado Avalanche need to figure something out soon.

After tying the club record with a 52 wins in 2013-2014 and winning the always tough Central Division, the Avalanche have come plummeting back to earth the last two years.

After missing the playoffs in back-to-back seasons, it seems that change is on the horizon within the organization.

While the Avalanche have had a very quiet offseason thus far, the trade rumors are starting to appear and one of the Avalanche’s biggest names is in the mix.

On Wednesday, Mile High Sports’ Jeremy Jerez joined The Press Box Insider with Josh Davis on Mile High Sports Radio 1340 AM | 104.7 FM to discuss what a Matt Duchene trade would mean for the Avalanche.

“If they’re going to make a trade for Matt Duchene,” Jerez said. “It’s going to have to be someone big and it’s going to have to be impactful for them to make the playoffs.”

THE PRESS BOX INSIDER NAMES LIVE STREAMDuchene is coming off one of his better years as a pro. He scored a career high 30 goals on his way to a 59-point season, his third highest point total since joining the National Hockey League in 2009. If the Avalanche do decide to trade him, it will need to be for someone who can match the production that he brings to the table.

The Avalanche desperately need some defensive help heading into next season, so trading Duchene for a defensemen seems like the obvious decision, Jerez thinks otherwise.

“Personally I’m against it because what they would end up getting ultimately is a defensemen,” Jerez said. “The Avalanche already struggle enough as it is offensively that they can’t keep chipping away at their offensive pieces.”

According to Jerez, this is “without a doubt” a make or break year for Patrick Roy. No matter what the Avalanche decide to do, it better result in wins if Roy wants to keep his job.
