Next year, the Colorado Avalanche will be making history in the state of Colorado. The Avs will be the first team to ever play an outdoor NHL hockey game in Colorado. But not just any Avs team will be taking the ice. Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg and Patrick Roy among others will be suiting up to face their bitter arch rivals of that era, the Detroit Red Wings on February 26, 2016 in an alumni game at Coors Field, which will be played in conjunction with the Stadium Series game between the current clubs the next day. The club announced a pre-sale on tickets for both games will be available starting Monday Aug. 10.

Pre-sale packages will be available to full-season ticket holders, suite holders and sponsors only. Colorado Rockies VIP customers also will be able to buy tickets beginning Aug. 17.

We have had an outstanding rivalry with the Red Wings during those years,” Sakic, the Avalanche’s executive vice president and general manager, told the Denver Post. “We are looking forward to experiencing this grand outdoor setting and a special weekend of hockey in Denver.”

Representing Detroit in the alumni game will be Detroit Hall of Famers Chris Chelios, Brendan Shanahan and Igor Larionov, plus upcoming 2015 inductee Nicklas Lindstrom. More roster announcements will be released closed to the date when the game is being played.

The league said of possible sales to the general public for the event, part of the 2016 Coors Light Stadium Series: “Information regarding ticket availability for the general public will be released at a later date.”
