Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has progressed through concussion protocol at a steady pace this week, but he’ll miss Sunday’s matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

Russell Wilson out Sunday for Denver Broncos matchup against Arizona Cardinals

The Denver Broncos will host Colt McCoy and the Arizona Cardinals in an AFC West vs. NFC West showdown at Empower Field at Mile High. Russell Wilson will not play on Sunday as the team looks to hold him out an additional week after he suffered a concussion last Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Throughout this week, Wilson has made progress as he works through the NFL’s concussion protocol. On Wednesday and Thursday, Wilson engaged in 30 minutes of football activity, indicating he was in Phase 3 of the NFL’s protocol. His practice status improved from DNP on Wednesday to limited on Thursday indicating more progression. On Friday, Wilson was ruled out despite being fully cleared within the protocol.

Brett Rypien will get the start in Wilson’s place under center and practice squad quarterback Jarrett Guarantano will be elevated on Sunday as Rypien’s backup.

During Friday’s media viewing portion of practice, Dre’Mont Jones was not participating as he continues to deal with a hip ailment. Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett noted that Jones saw a hip specialist this week.

“He’s seeing some hip specialists,” Hackett told the media on Thursday. “He’s another guy that’s day-by-day. We’re just checking through everything and making sure we’re doing what’s right for him.” With the Broncos’ dominant interior pass rusher missing three straight days of practice, his status for Sunday is listed as questionable

D.J. Jones was not spotted during the open media viewing portion of practice despite being a full participant with a shoulder injury on Wednesday and Thursday. According to Hackett, Jones was dealing with an illness on Friday and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game.

Wide receiver Courtland Sutton and running back Chase Edmonds were spotted working on the side field for the Broncos as the team took to the field for their final practice before Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. Sutton continues to work through a hamstring injury he suffered in the Broncos’ loss two weeks ago against the Baltimore Ravens, but will miss Sunday’s game. Edmonds, who suffered an ankle injury in the Broncos’ overtime loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 11, is eligible to return off injured reserve next week.

Players listed as questionable for Sunday’s game include linebacker Dakota Allen, fullback/tight end Andrew Beck, and offensive guard Dalton Risner. Allen and Beck have both been battling hamstring injuries that have held them out of action. Risner missed last Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury.

However, the Broncos will be getting outside linebacker Randy Gregory and offensive tackle Billy Turner back this Sunday which could help boost both sides of the ball for Denver against the Cardinals.

The Denver Broncos (3-10) will host the Arizona Cardinals (4-9) on Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High with kickoff set for 2:05 p.m. MT.
