The new guys are fitting in.

Three of the four newcomers found the scoresheet Tuesday in just the second game since a bevy of trades consummated by Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland last week. Second-line center Casey Mittelstadt scored in the second period on an assist from forward Brandon Duhaime while defenseman Sean Walker also had a primary helper, setting up Josh Manson’s goal nearly 10 minutes earlier.

The Avalanche trounced the Calgary Flames 6-2 at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Mikko Rantanen (two goals, two assists), Valeri Nichushkin (goal, two assists) and Nathan MacKinnon (goal, assist) were reunited as the top line in the absence of Artturi Lehkonen, who missed the game with an illness. The trio combined for 10 points, helping MacKinnon build a six-point lead on Tampa Bay’s Nikita Kucherov for the Art Ross Trophy. Rantanen, who is riding a 10-game point streak, now sits fifth in the NHL in points. Only MacKinnon, Kucherov, Connor McDavid and David Pastrnak are ahead of him.

Colorado is riding a four-game winning streak — outscoring the opposition 20-5 in that stretch. MacKinnon has points on 12 of those 20 goals. Rantanen has 10. The depth has been massively upgraded and will help the Avs embark on what they hope will be another long playoff run. But with the top guys playing like this, it’s hard to picture many teams successfully matching up against the Avs.

The Avs trailed 2-1 after the first period. After scoring the opening goal on the power play, Colorado surrendered two in a row to Calgary, which had just three shots at the time of its second goal. Avalanche netminder Justus Annunen stopped each of the next 24 shots to earn his third consecutive victory. Colorado outshot the Flames 38-27.

The rout was on in the second. Led by Rantanen’s offensive surge, the Avs scored five straight goals to take a 6-2 lead into the final frame. In the process, they chased goalie Dan Vladar, who faced 35 shots through two periods. Rookie goalie Dustin Wolf took over in the third and made three saves as the Avs rolled four lines in preparation for a back-to-back on Wednesday in Vancouver.

The Avs improved to 41-20-5 and sit just two points back of the Dallas Stars with a game in hand. Because of the regulation wins tiebreaker, Colorado could pass Dallas on Wednesday with a victory against the Vancouver Canucks. Both Dallas and Winnipeg — the other two teams atop the division — have one more matchup against the Avs at Ball Arena in April.
