It is important for any politician to be passionate about the community he/she serves. That passion was on display by Greeley, Colo. mayor Tom Norton this weekend.

On Saturday, the University of Northern Colorado men’s basketball team fell to Big Sky Conference foes Weber State by the score of 74-69. Apparently, at least one impassioned fan felt the officiating to play a part in the outcome.

Norton was ejected from the contest for allegedly storming onto the court from his courtside seat to protest a call; something the mayor denies.

“I didn’t go on the court, they said I did, but I didn’t,” Norton told the Greeley Tribune. “I’m behaving.”

Eventually, Norton was allowed back into the arena, sitting seven rows up for the rest of the contest, which went no without incident. UNC coach Jeff Linder, for one, appreciated his mayor’s support.

“He’s my neighbor,” Linder said of Norton. “I’ll have to send him over some treats tonight.”

Norton is married to UNC President Kay Norton. The Bears are 7-12 on the season (3-5 in the Big Sky), and will be back in action against Northern Arizona University on Thursday.
