Denver Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib took the practice field Monday for the first time since an offseason incident June 5, 2016 in Dalas in which Talib suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.

No charges have been filed in the incident and the NFL has not levied any kind of a suspension, although speculation emerged Monday that Talib could be looking at upwards of eight games.

Until a suspension is announced, Talib is doing everything he can to get back in playing form for the season opener Sept. 8.

In addition to practicing in pads with his teammates for the first time, Talib also met with the media for the first time on Monday. Here is a transcript of his Q&A, courtesy of Broncos PR.

On the incident on June 5th

“The situation is still under review and we have to respect that process. I’m not going to talk about that right now, but I feel great. I did some one-on-ones today. I felt pretty good on the field.”

On when he’ll be ready to play full speed

“I don’t really want to put a number on it, but from what I did today, I felt pretty good. We have time so I’ll keep on working with the best training staff in the world—‘Greek’ [Head Athletic Trainer Steve Antonopulos] and his crew. I’ll stay at it.”

On being welcomed back to the field

“The love around the building—from the rookies to [Executive Vice President of Football Operations/GM] John Elway—has been great since June 5th. All of the text messages, all of the calls, all of the ‘welcome backs’ today, there was a bunch of love out here today. I definitely felt it.”

On getting back on the field from rehab

“That was the most important thing, to put these cleats back on to have a chance to come out here and run again. It was a blessing to be out here. I really appreciate it.”

On motivating the team while on the field

“I always feel that. When the energy’s low, I’m one of the guys who is kind of vocal about getting our energy up. That’s one of the things that you miss, being on that sideline, not being able to get our guys going. I definitely miss it. I’m looking forward to getting back on that field.”

On the defense’s potential to improve

“We’re definitely more confident in the techniques that our coaches are teaching us. I know confidence brings productivity, so  there’s a lot more confidence in the technique. Last year, it took a minute for the guys to buy into the techniques that the coaches were teaching. You see guys running away, coming out and getting straight to it and working on their techniques”

On concerns regarding the progress of his recovery

“Not really. I moved around, felt pretty good. I still have time. We will keep progressing. ‘Greek’ and the crew, we’ll just keep progressing. By the time I get on the field, I’ll be ready to go.”

On players who have caught his eye during training camp

“A lot of guys are making plays. [S] Justin Simmons had one of the best interceptions. I don’t know if you guys saw it. It was so slick. It was one of the best interceptions ever. [RB] Devontae [Booker] looks great. He’s putting his foot in the ground. I think he is going to be a good player for us. It’s a lot of guys out there making plays.”

On developing a deeper love and appreciation for football

“To sit on that sideline and being away from football, you see how important it is to you. You definitely learn to love the game a little bit more.”

On playing in the preseason

“We will see how it goes. We’ll take it day-to-day. We’ll stay on ‘Greek’s’ timeline. If they tell me that I’m good enough to go, then I’ll be good enough to go.”
