Inconsistency was the theme of the day down at the UC Health Training Center, and it started with the quarterbacks. Thanks to a rough year behind center last season, all eyes will be on Mark Sanchez, Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch during training camp. And on this particular day, it wasn’t pretty.

After 90 minutes of practice and one bad offensive possession after another, head coach Gary Kubiak gathered the team and let them know that he did not appreciate their effort. The motivational speech didn’t do much, though, as the offense still struggled throughout the rest of practice.

The only real positive came from Sanchez, who tossed a touchdown pass inside the red zone as the morning session was winding down, but that wasn’t enough to justify the lackadaisical effort.

“[We] can’t come out like we did today tomorrow, or we’re gonna be in trouble” Sanchez said after practice.

Sanchez, right now, is presumed to be the leading candidate to start on Sept. 8 when the Denver Broncos open up the season against the Carolina Panthers, but he’s yet to truly separate himself from either Siemian or Lynch. that’s no disrespect to Lynch or Siemian, but if Sanchez was the savvy vet he’s supposed to be, he would have done something to stand out by now.

Siemian, a former seventh-round pick, isn’t planning on giving Sanchez any ground.

“I have to think I am going to be the starter on September,” Siemian said. “It’s the right mindset.”

Lynch has looked good in spurts, too, but today was not his day.

“I definitely felt like I’ve been inconsistent at times,” Lynch said. “It’s important for me to stay consistent.”

On Wednesday, after a strong showing on Monday, Lynch looked like the rookie he is, even turning the wrong way on a handoff at one point.

That opener against the Panthers is inching closer and closer, and there’s still no clear-cut No. 1 guy at quarterback. Gary Kubiak has plenty of time, but if one of these guys doesn’t separate himself from the others, Broncos Country will soon find that last year’s poor quarterback play was just the tip of the iceberg.
