For the second consecutive season, Colorado State senior Mostafa Hassan has been named the Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Men’s Student-Athlete of the Year. The conference announced Hassan’s accolade on Tuesday.

Hassan is just the third repeat winner of the conference’s annual men’s indoor honor, joining Lee Emanuel (2009-10) and Luke Caldwell (2013-14) from New Mexico. Additionally, the senior is just the fifth to earn the annual indoor honor in back-to-back seasons between women’s and men’s indoor track & field (San Diego State’s Ashley Henderson in 2017-18, Utah State’s Chari Hawkins in 2014-15). The Mountain West first awarded that accolade following the 2008 season.

The Cairo, Egypt native is the only thrower in Mountain West indoor track & field history – men’s or women’s – to earn this award multiple times. In addition to his two annual indoor conference honors, Hassan was also named Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Men’s Co-Student-Athlete of the Year in 2016.

The Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Women’s and Men’s Student Athlete of the Year honors recognized the student-athletes deemed to be the conference’s most outstanding representative in the sport of indoor track & field. Student-athletes are nominated and selected by each member institution’s head coaches.

Hassan led Colorado State men’s track & field to a 16th-place NCAA finish this indoor season, marking the program’s second-highest indoor finish in school history (12th in 2017). The senior won the individual NCAA title in the shot put for the second consecutive season, becoming the first repeat NCAA champion in a throwing event in Mountain West indoor track & field history. Hassan completed a dominant showing at the NCAA Indoor Championships, as he had the top three marks at the national meet and the meet’s best mark by nearly two feet (68-5.25/20.86m). Hassan also won his third consecutive MW indoor shot put title and his fifth overall (two outdoor).

The Colorado State track & field team begins its outdoor season on Saturday, March 24 at the Mines Nature’s Bakery Invite. The meet is hosted by the Colorado School of Mines from the Stermole Track & Field Complex in Golden, Colo.
