In the aftermath of the Colorado Rockies’ biggest blown lead in the ninth inning in franchise history, the club added to their bullpen once again.
Jesus Tinoco – commonly known for his part in the Troy Tulowitzki trade package – was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on Saturday, with Brendan Rodgers being optioned back to the Isotopes.
The stint with the major league club will be the second of the year for Tinoco. In his first and only appearance with the Rockies, the hurler went one scoreless inning, allowing only a single hit. He also struck out a pair.
For the Isotopes, Tinoco has appeared in 23 games this year. Across 29 innings, the reliever has allowed 14 earned runs and struck out 19.
For Rodgers, the demotion comes after one of the most long-awaited debuts in recent memory for the franchise. In his 21 games with the Rockies, he slashed .246/.300/.277 with 22 strikeouts and four walks.
The young infielder was forced into a rotation with Ryan McMahon at second base, resulting in decreased playing time for both. In the last 10 games that Rodgers has appeared in, he’s registered a hit only five times in 33 plate appearances.
While unexpected, the move likely stems from both the ineffectiveness of Rodgers in recent weeks, as well as the club being forced to use each reliever in their bullpen in their 12-inning loss.
The demotion figures to be a temporary one for the club’s top prospect, as well as a chance to get back on track with a lower level of competition. Prior to his promotion, Rodgers had only 204 total at-bats at the Triple-A level.
