Tyler Anderson had a commanding debut Sunday night, as the Rockies edged the San Diego Padres in a 2-1 victory, marking six wins in their last eight games.
Drafted in the first round in 2011 by the Rockies, Anderson made strides in the minor league, but was set back by a fractured elbow in 2015.
“He has had some injuries,” said Thomas Harding of MLB.com when he joined Gil Whitely on Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7 on Monday afternoon. “[He] really kind of fell off the radar as far as media was concerned, but they love this kid because of the way he thinks through the game.”
On Sunday, Anderson threw 6.1 innings, while striking out six, and giving up just one run. He also did not walk a single batter, which is crucial to keeping baserunners at a minimum.
When asked if he thinks Anderson will stay in the starting rotation, Harding said, ““I think for now he is. There was some thought that maybe you would call up a guy from AAA and send him right back, but the problem is Chris Rusin is a little bit sore after his last outing. There is a chance that he will be skipped or put on the disabled list, so I expect Anderson to be around for a bit.”
With a career ERA of 2.38 and a strike-out-to-walk ratio of almost 3:1 in the minors after five years, Anderson seems primed to help a ball club that has been struggling with pitching this season.
