With the second round of the MLS SuperDraft resuming Tuesday, the Colorado Rapids are trying to prepare for the upcoming season. That has so-far meant lots of movement in the midfield. But a move this weekend signals the chance that a major signing could be on the way.

Colorado is rumored to be in the mix for USMNT and Everton goaltender Tim Howard. The most recent offseason move is a not so subtle hint that Howard might be headed to Commerce City.

Over the weekend, Colorado traded goalkeeper Clint Irwin to Toronto FC in exchange for targeted allocation money, Toronto’s highest natural third round selection in Tuesday’s ongoing SuperDraft and a conditional first round selection in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.

Irwin, a 26 year-old from Charlotte, NC, spent his first three MLS seasons with the Colorado Rapids. He has played in 89 career matches, starting all but two, posted 25 shutouts and 29 wins. He was named an MLS All-Star (coaches selection) in 2015.

Colorado holds the No. 1 spot in the allocation ranking order, giving them first choice at Howard and any other number of possible impact players available on the Allocation List. They’ve also been stockpiling allocation cash along with their trades, a sure sign they’re trying to land a big fish.

The Rapids 2016 season starts on Mar. 6 against the San Jose Earthquakes from San Jose, CA. The Rapids home opener is on Mar. 12 with a match up against the LA Galaxy.
